The former name of Tokyo was Edo or Yedo. In 12th Century BC, Tokyo was full of swampy and wooden area that was occupied by Edo (a warrior family). It was late in the year 1871 that the postal system was developed in Tokyo. One tragic incident that was an integral part of Tokyo''''s history was one horrendous earthquake that led to the death of more than 140,000 Japanese people. It was Emperor Meiji who named the city Tokyo (Tokio) which meant Eastern Capital. At present, Tokyo is opening up to the world as a true international city. Tokyo government is aiming to have about 10 million travelers visiting the place by the year 2010.
