New York City is the center of the New York Metropolitan Area and has a population of approximately 8.1 million people.  It is one of the global centers of international affairs, finance,  politics, communications, film, music, fashion, and culture, and is one of the world's most important and influential cities.

New York was founded as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. England took over the control in 1664 and named it New York after King Charles II of England gave the lands to his brother, the Duke of York.  New York was the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.

In 2010, it had a record number of tourists with 48.7 million. It is considered to be the cultural capital of the world. It hosts numerous  world-class museums, art galleries, and theaters, is the second largest center for the film industry in the United States.

The major destinations in NYC are the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Broadway theatre productions, museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art  and other tourist attractions in such as Central Park, Washington Square Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Bronx Zoo, South Street Seaport, New York Botanical Garden, luxury shopping along Fifth and Madison Avenues, and events such as the Tribeca Film Festival and free performances in Central Park at Summerstage and Delacorte Theater. Don’t forget about  the  Statue of Liberty , a major tourist attraction, which is one of the most important landmarks of the United States.

New York City has over 28,000 acres of parkland and 22 km of public beaches. Central Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, is the most visited city park in the United States.

Street fairs and street events such as the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village and New York Marathon attract tourists every year.

New York City has also a strong musical culture and  jazz, gospel music, rock and roll and rhythm and blues tours are available for tourists. If you’re a gourmand, you’ll be glad to find that  New York is one of the top culinary destinations in the world with a food culture influenced by the city's immigrants and large number of dining patrons.  Don’t forget about  sporting events which attracts tourist to major venues such as the Yankee Stadium, Citi Field  and Madison Square Garden.
