The capital of Azerbaijan Republic, Baku is positioned on the southern shore of Absheron Peninsula. It is one of the biggest and oldest cities in East in terms of territory, population and antiquity. The estimated population of Baku is 1.9 million. The city is classified into 11 administrative raions including Yassamal, Surakhany, Khatai, Sabunchu, Sabail, Nizami, Nasimi, Narimanov, Garadagh, Binagadi and Azizbayov and forty eight townships.
The name Baku is considered to denote "Gods' City" and a home to vibrant, unique Azerbajani culture. The long history of Baku ruled by different invading empires left it with numerous significant and sometime contradictory cultural legacies. Its Azerbaijani culture contains the major cultural institutions as well as oldest historic buildings of the country. Now the city is a home to several libraries, cinema theaters, film studio, opera theatre, philharmonic society, eleven high education institutes, seven theatres and thirty museums. Besides, there is no official religion; the majority of the people are Muslim.
