Mumbai was captured by the Portuguese in the year 1534 and at that time it was known by the name Bombay.  In the year 1708, it became the head quarter of the east India Company. In the year 1869, Suez Canal was opened here and Mumbai started to develop as an international airport. Mumbai was made the capital of the state Maharashtra in the year 1960 and the name Bombay was changed to Mumbai after the name of a goddess Mumbadevi. 

The culture of Mumbai is dominated by the Mumbaikars who live here, it’s recognized by the religions followed here, the languages spoken here, the various cuisines preferred here and last but not the least the lifestyle of the people living here.  The entertainment avenues that make the culture of Mumbai a more interesting one include places such as Marine Drive, Chowpatty, Colaba causeway and many more.
