Bangkok
The name Bangkok is
derived from Bangmakok. Bang is the central Thai name for villages and towns
located on the river banks, and Makok derives its name from Spondias Dulcis, a
tree that produces yellow plum like fruits. Bangkok was a small trading
community during Ayutthaya Kingdom, which reigned from 1350 to 1767. Burmese
King Taksin conquered Bangkok and gave a new name -Thonburi. In 1782, King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke gave the
city its current official name Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, which literally means
City of Angels. And on April 21st, 1782 Bangkok became the capital of Kingdom
of Thailand.
