Algiers, the capital of Algeria is the largest metropolis of the country and second largest city in Maghreb. Home to around 3,354,000 people, Algiers is a very attractive city with beautiful sightseeing options. The name (Algiers) is taken from an Arabic word "al-jazair" that is translated the islands, representing 4 islands which became part of the mainland in the year 1525.

Algiers is known as the city of culture, a blend of French, Berber and Arab heritage with history of warfare and spirituality, a place of poverty and tourism. Ninety nine percent of residents are Sunnin Muslim and the main languages spoken here are Berber, French and Arabic, while English is hardly used.

Sightseeing in Algiers

If you are in Algiers you can enjoy viewing some famous wonderful mosques, historical museums, structures and magnificent "Kasbah", an ancient town. There are numerous historical buildings in the metropolis that appeal to hundreds of vacationers. An "Old Town" also lies in the city which was previous known as "Casbah."

There is a wide network of small alleys and numerous whitewashed houses. Algiers has pretty boulevards that date back to the era when the French resided in the city. Tourists can enjoy the magnificent view of city and the bay from "Couvent d’ Afrique."

Algiers is also popular for its numerous museums such as "Bardo Museum" and "Museum of Antiquities" that accommodate many artifacts associated to different time periods. Many charming mosques are located in the city as well. "The Great Mosque" has decorated interior and known as the oldest mosque of the city. "The New Mosque" is also worth visiting as it is designed in "Greek Cross" style. In addition, you don’t  want to miss visiting  the "Church of Holy Trinity" and the "Monument des Martyrs".

Passport and Visa requirements for US Citizens

 A valid passport and visa are required to enter Algeria. Persons arriving without valid passports and the appropriate Algeria visa may not be permitted to enter and will be subject to a fine and immediate deportation at the traveler's expense.
